Why I’m Running

At a time when many Americans feel disheartened by politics, I want to thank you for taking the time to learn about this campaign. Together, we can ensure our representatives understand our hopes, struggles, and the everyday issues that affect Southern Indiana Hoosiers.

As a teacher, I’ve spent my entire career as a public servant working to improve my community and create an opportunity for youth to succeed. As a father of three, I’ve navigated the challenges of simultaneously working and raising a healthy family. As a leader in my teachers union, I know the importance of working together to advocate for change. These three roles, teacher, father, and labor leader, inform and motivate many of the policies I care about and will advocate for in DC. You can learn more about these issues below.

As a teacher and public servant, I work for a brighter future for my students and neighbors. We need quality education and thriving, sustainable neighborhoods. When elected, I will sponsor policies that ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed in their academics, careers, and lives – no matter their zip code, their skin color, or the amount of money in their parents’ wallets. I want to cultivate vibrant communities both inside and outside the classroom that promote positive, life-shaping experiences for students so they can contribute to the long-term growth of Southern Indiana.

As a son, a husband, and now a father of three, I know the critical importance of family health and well-being. We need accessible health care and support for parents in the workplace. I’ve navigated the challenges of simultaneously working and raising a healthy family. When elected, I will promote policies that prioritize family health – policies that make raising a family more affordable, make accessing childcare and health services easier, and make retiring with loved ones more dignified. I will ensure that all members of the family, from young to old, are mentally, physically, and financially equipped to be their best and to pursue their dreams.

WORKER RIGHTS AND JUSTICE

As a leader in my local labor union, I know the importance of working together to defend good jobs and to support the rights of others. We need to protect worker rights and advocate for justice. I firmly believe that people must stand united to ensure that all individuals – regardless of where they come from, the color of their skin, or the job they have – can take care of themselves and their families after a hard day’s work. When elected, I will advocate for policies that prioritize working people and that promote justice for underrepresented groups. Let’s stand together in kindness and for justice in how we treat each other.

Priorities

End Corruption

We need more public servants in office, not career politicians. I became a teacher because I want to see students succeed. Similarly, I want to go to DC to see my neighbors succeed. I’m not in this for myself, big money interests, or my party. I want to write policies that end corruption, limit the power of lobbying groups, and prioritize Hoosiers.

Veterans

The brave individuals who served our country deserve access to the best possible programs and services our country can offer. This includes health and mental health care, job training, education, and other quality of life services.

Seniors

We all deserve a dignified retirement. Social Security and Medicare are benefits earned through years of hard work. I will fight to ensure these programs stay strong while also working to ensure prescription drug prices are lowered, in-home health is widely available, and seniors can keep up with rising cost of living.

Fiscal Responsibility

Hoosiers know the importance of fiscal responsibility. As a life-long Hoosier, I promise to cut wasteful spending while investing in our future responsibly.

Agriculture

I support farmers. All Hoosiers know that agriculture is an important part of life and the economy in Southern Indiana. I support policies that help our farmers and our future generations take pride in those working hard to feed our nation.

Healthcare

We all deserve affordable, convenient, quality health and mental health services. Nobody should go into debt or be denied services because of an accident or illness.

Conservation

The 9th district is beautiful – forests, campgrounds, parks, rivers, and lakes. Let’s ensure that future generations have the opportunity to enjoy this beauty. Let’s work towards policies that promote clean air, water, soil, and energy.

Education

Education is the bedrock of our nation. Let’s support our students and schools. Let’s keep our public schools as hubs of our community.

As a leader in my union, I’ve organized for good wages, benefits, and a dignified retirement. I support small business owners and workers. I value an honest day’s work that helps the local community, as well as the ability to organize. I’ll fight to ensure Hoosiers can take care of themselves and their families with good jobs.

FAQs

Legalizing cannabis?

I’m in favor of legalizing cannabis at the federal level. The new tax revenue generated from legalization can be used for substance abuse and addiction services, mental health programs, and other quality of life improvements. Legalization can also help farmers and small business owners.

Women's Reproductive Health?

I trust women and medical professionals to make decisions that are best for their health and families. No person or government should be able to use or make decisions about a person’s body against their will.

Guns?

Every person I speak with wants a safe community. I grew up around hunters and guns here in Indiana, and I respect the second amendment and those who use firearms responsibly and safely. I also know that there are around 100 deaths involving guns every day in the United States. We must do better to keep guns away from children and those who are unstable and/or violent. Our policies reflect our morals, and I believe it’s possible to work toward safe communities while supporting responsible gun ownership.

Immigration?

Our borders should be secure, and we should encourage safe and legal immigration. Immigration that works creates a positive impact on our economy, our community, and our future.

Inflation?

Many politicians in DC have forgotten what it’s like to raise a family, run a small business, or take care of an aging loved one while working and paying for bills. We need politicians who aren’t out of touch, and will make decisions that help their neighbors, not just lobbyists and rich friends. My opponent likes to point fingers, but I’ve actually fought for good wages, benefits, and retirement, and I’ll keep doing that for Hoosiers when I’m in DC.

Russia and Ukraine?

We should stand against bullies. We can be an ally to Ukraine to help de-escalate the situation and strive for peace.

Drug Addiction/Opioids

We need to help individuals, families, and communities struggling with addiction. This is one of the top issues I hear about while traveling around Southern Indiana. We need to help those currently going through addiction while also fighting the root problem.
